If you are thinking about going indie or doing your own art thing or breaking out on your own to start a startup... That's awesome.
Don't quit your day job, as the saying goes. Not because I don't believe in you, but because the deck is stacked heavily against you. Almost everybody I know that has successfully gone indie did so with a big pile of cash in the bank, or with a day job supporting them.
Working on your passion thing in evenings and weekends is safe and good. Do it. It means you'll make more art, burn out less, and overall make the world a better place.
Don't destroy your career or your financial life by chasing what is largely a hit-driven economy. Pretend you are a painter - you wouldn't buy your first set of paints, having never even doodled before, then immediately quit and try to open a gallery, right?
